Every year about this time, I get really excited about our upcoming conference, Aim High. The holidays are over, the weather is bleak, and the long stretch between Happy New Year and Happy Graduation seems daunting. My solution to avoid the fatigue of massive and recurring daily responsibilities has been to jump at the chance to get out of the office for a brief immersion in the camaraderie of other people in indy school marcom. These people are ever curious and friendly, and smart and optimistic. And generous.
When we launched Aim High about 15 years ago, very few of those registering had the word communications in their titles. And marketing? Still a dirty word with faculty. A handful of schools had a solo person working on publications and p.r. but even more institutions doled out the responsibility of maintaining reputation in the market place to admissions and development. Silos galore. Tiny resources. Not enough time. No place at the head’s table.
Et voila! A new administrative office has been born and YOU are helping to invent a professional path that has changed and accelerated and differentiated at the speed of lightning thanks to our growing intersection with technology.
But it will never be all AI. Our need for authenticity, affirmation and human interaction will keep us forever searching for what makes the most compelling messaging as well as how to deliver and measure it using the best new tools.
Come jump in with us in New Haven next month. You’ll go back to work feeling refreshed and ready to take on the second half of the year with new information and new friends. You’ll feel the value every day. Aim High!
