For several years, the Academy’s alumni complained about the lack of interaction between them and the school. There has been a clear feeling that the school only contacts them when Cushing wants them to donate money. One goal of the magazine has been to give the alumni a touch point with the school that does not involve asking for donations. The magazine had been discontinued for two years during a staff change; Cheney & Company helped reinvent the publication and a goal of publishing twice a year has been met.
While the magazine does include a section on philanthropy, its emphasis is on the outcomes of philanthropy rather than asking for gifts. Further, the “Art of Giving” section includes stories about students and faculty engaging in community service as well as stories about donations. The fall issue carries the annual donor report to double up on postage.
